General. A friendly amateur couple’s and/or line dance competition benefiting the scholarship fund. Each area must dance one full, visible basic pattern with music and choreographed steps.
Dance rules. Line dance competitors must space or stagger on the floor relative to each other and begin after the verbal or non-verbal count-in, in the direction designated by the choreographer. Couple categories include smooth, Cuban, street, two-step, cha-cha, west coast swing and east coast swing. Line/family dances include the Electric Slide, Cha-Cha Slide, Boots on the Ground and others to be identified. Music is provided by a DJ — you may supply your own selections or let the DJ choose.
Age requirements. At least 14 years old; 70 and older welcome.
Floor restrictions. No acrobatics, sitting, lying or bridging on the floor; no leaps or splits — both feet stay on the floor. Hands, arms, facial expressions and hat work are allowed. Competitors must stay courteous, hold their relative position and follow the “Flow of Dance,” even during variations.
Attire. Cowboy hats and fans are fine. Only tennis shoes on the gym floor — no fashion heels, no cowboy boots, no bare feet. No sequins, rhinestones, beads, metal embellishments, metallic threads or dots, including jewelry. Tasteful decorum appropriate to the dance style is favored; costuming is judged along with steps. Props must be portable, not living, not wall-mounted, removed immediately after, and must not touch any attendee.
Choreography. The dance is judged, not the dancer. Rhythm, motion and character must match the music. Be fun, creative and innovative — make it appeal to the audience.
Music. Each area submits two song choices plus a dance-off selection (title and artist) on the entry form; the area coordinator is responsible for submitting it by the deadline. Beyond the music itself, one minute total is allowed for prop setup, entrance, prop removal and exit. No obscene, indecent or profane content.
Conduct. All judges’ decisions are final. Be family-friendly and congratulate all winners. Contest details are reviewed at the judges’ meeting held before the contest.
Welcome • Blessing of the food • Dinner served • Memorial service • Dance contest winners presented • Scholarship awards • Music
